CDC Wins EPA Award

The Conservation Data Center, a unit within the Eastern Caribbean Center at UVI is one of this year's winners of the Environmental Protection Agency's prestigious Environmental Quality Award.

According to William Muszynski, acting Regional Director for EPA Region 2, "the Environmental Quality Award is the highest recognition presented to the public" by the EPA.

The Conservation Data Center has been involved in a number of projects, including the mapping of terrestrial vegetation and marine benthic communities, Geographic Information Systems and Global Positioning Systems instruction, and a pilot project to develop a wellhead protection program in collaboration with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources.

The unit's motto is "Information today for tomorrow's resources."

EPA Region 2 presents Environmental Quality Awards annually to individuals, nonprofit groups, educators, businesspeople, government officials and journalists from New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands who have made significant contributions to improving the quality of the environment in the region. Winners are chosen by an internal panel that reviews nominations submitted from inside and outside the Agency.
