This exhibit is the culmination of five years of archeological research, fieldwork, and community engagement as part of the Slave Wrecks Project led by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture (SI-NMAAHC) and The George Washington University (GWU).
The exhibit will be on display at The National Park Service (NPS) Fort Christiansvaern, in Christiansted, St. Croix with future intentions to exhibit at the for Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture (SI-NMAAHC). The exhibit will explore the histories, cultures, and legacies of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and enslavement and freedom from enslavement in the Danish West Indies, today the Virgin Islands of the United States. The exhibit will address issues of race, identity, colonization, and the power of place.
UVI students and alumni will lead two talking sessions seeking public input and comment on a proposed exhibit.
The National Park Service and the University of the Virgin Islands welcome members of the public to participate in the planning and development of this exhibit. Please join us to participate in two public meetings to share your questions, thoughts, and comments on Enslavement in Virgin Islands History.
