The University of the Virgin Islands was selected to host a Student Convocation with the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor, associate justice, United States Supreme Court. This is a historic and unique opportunity for our students and the University. The event will take place from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 9, 2017 in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas Campus. A livestream recording will be available to the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus, St. Croix. The University will also bestow an honorary degree upon Justice Sotomayor at the Convocation. We encourage faculty, staff, students and alumni to come out and support our students at this very special and significant event.
Because we are hosting a Supreme Court Justice, there are heightened security measures that we must comply with for this event. Please note that this is not a public event and everyone accessing the SFC must have a valid picture ID and are required to submit to a security screening process to gain entrance to the building.
In addition to the above, please be guided by the following:
1) On February 9, the SFC will be open from 12:30 p.m. to begin seating.
2) While there are limited preferential seats available, you are encouraged to arrive early and on time. Seating will be determined on a first come basis.
3) The event is expected to begin promptly at 2 p.m. Once the event has started, there will be minimal disruptions and seating allowed.
4) No backpacks or large bags whatsoever will be allowed in the SFC. There will be no bag storage area. A small purse is acceptable.
5) Individuals attending the event should have proper identification available. Students and employees are encouraged to have readily available their employee or student I.D. and/or name tag displayed. Individuals who are unable to produce a valid picture I.D. will not be allowed in the venue.
6) No recording, flash photography or picture taking of any kind is allowed in the SFC. This includes on your mobile, smart phone, iPad, tablet or other devices.
7) Once you are inside the arena, all phones must be placed on silent or airplane mode.
8) No firearm, weapon, device, instrument, substance or material of any kind that may be used to effect bodily harm will be allowed in or near SFC.
Please note that any individual found to have violated any of the above guidelines in any way, including recording, picture taking or unauthorized posting or sharing of the event, will be removed from the building and not allowed to re-enter. There will be a noticeable security presence in the venue, and there will be a no tolerance policy enforced.
We anticipate this will be a wonderful event for our students and the University community. Please be mindful of the above measures to ensure that we have a safe and successful event. Any questions regarding the security measures can be directed to our Campus Security at (340) 693-1530.
