In the spirit of Black History Month, UVI’s Student Affairs Office, in collaboration with the Student Government Association’s Black Heritage Committee, will host a poster competition and cultural presentations on Friday, Feb. 26, in the Sports and Fitness Center. The event is themed “Black History: The Caribbean Experience.” The community is invited to the celebration.
A poster competition and exhibition reflecting the theme will commence at 3:30 p.m. Posters will be judged based on creativity, originality, impact, overall message and the elements used to convey the message. The grand prize winner will receive $200 and the first runner up will receive $100. Submissions should be sent to vrivers@uvi.edu.
UVI clubs and organizations representing Caribbean nations will have cultural displays, native food tasting and demonstrations.
The feature presentation, by well-known culture bearer Glen “Kwabena” Davis and student collaborators, will begin at 5:30 p.m. They will explore the influence of music on Caribbean life through storytelling, Caribbean folklore and musical renditions. The presentation promises to be an entertaining, and interactive educational experience for students, faculty, staff and the members of the wider community.
