The UVI-Virgin Islands Caribbean Cultural Center, (VICCC) in collaboration with, the Virgin Islands Developmental Disabilities Council (VIDDC) are hosting the 2nd Annual “Empowered Parents=Successful Children Conference for Parents’ Advocacy.” The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, at UVI’s Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas Campus and on Friday, Sept. 4, at UVI’s Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.
Workshops and presentations include:
- An exclusive first-time screening of the film “Including Samuel”
- Hands-on sessions on “Mental Health and Our Children”
- Active Steps for Disability Rights
- Steps to Know for Individualized Education Program’s (IEPs) and Behavioral Plans
- Updates on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance Issues
- Important Facts on Child Nutrition and Education
The keynote presenter is Bonnie Jean Smith, of The Pacer Center, which is nationally-recognized as champions for children with disabilities. Admission is free. Light Caribbean breakfast and lunch will be provided for pre-registered participants.
The conference is co-sponsored by the Virgin Islands Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc. (VIDDC) and UVI’s Virgin Islands Caribbean Cultural Center (VICCC) with collaborative efforts among the Developmental Disabilities (DD) Network partners: Disability Rights Center of the Virgin Islands (DRCVI), UVI Center on Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD), VI Department of Human Services-Head Start Division, USVI Parent Teacher Student Association and others.
