The St. Thomas Bat Team, led by UVI Assistant Professor Renata Platenberg, will host a “Meet the Bats” event from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Magens Bay, Shed 4. There will be interactive displays that participants can visit to learn more about the ecology and conservation of our local bat species, including echolocation, bat houses, bat-friendly gardening, and research methods. Bat research and demonstrations, which are funded by a Judith E. Towle Environmental Studies Grant through the VI Community Foundation, will be on display. At dusk, there will be a guided “Bat Walk” that will allow participants to listen in on bat echolocation calls. There will also be an opportunity to meet a live bat, up-close and personal. The event is free and suitable for all ages. Please bring a flashlight and come prepared for mosquitos.
