The VI Community is invited to be a part of “The Great VI Frog Count,” a citizen science project aimed at recording all the frogs from all corners of the Virgin Islands from Oct. 8 to Oct. 15. During citizen science projects, both researchers and non-scientist collaborate to collect data.
Volunteers are asked to make recordings of calling frogs using smart phones or tablets, and send along with a screen shot of map coordinates using compass or map app that can be downloaded for free from ITunes or Google Play.
There are three steps to follow:
- Go outside away from television and other noisy devices
- Use a voice recorder app to record the frogs for two minutes
- Take a screen shot of the coordinates and email both – together or separate- to vi.frogcount@myuvi.net. Place your location in the subject.
UVI researchers will analyze the recordings and map the results. The project is being sponsored by VI-EPSCoR. For more information contact Dr. Renata Platenberg at (340) 693-1238 or renata.platenberg@live.uvi.edu.
