Virgin Islands students who are planning to participate in the Fall 2014 Cyber Patriot Competition are invited to participate in Cyber Camp VI, a free, five-week summer program at the University of the Virgin Islands. The camp, which began June 9 and continues through July 11, is for students entering grades six through 10. Camp sessions will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on UVI’s St. Thomas Campus. Program Coordinator Dr. Marc Boumedine, associate professor of computer science, said the program still has some openings available and encouraged interested students to contact him at (340) 693-1255 or send e-mail to mboumed@uvi.edu. Pre-application forms are available at https://sites.google.com/site/cybercampvi/.
Registration is ongoing - call or e-mail for details.
Dr. Boumedine said the course will introduce basic cyber security concepts, while including hands-on experience required for the competition. Attendees will have the opportunity to experiment on both Windows and Linux platforms. They will also apply game programming in the context of cyber security. Speakers from academia, industries and the Sandia National Laboratories will discuss various issues related to cyber security. This program is funded with the support of a grant from the Department of Energy in collaboration with Norfolk State University.
