The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) is coordinating 2014 Coastweeks events on St. Croix and St. Thomas. Coastweeks is a period each fall dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of beaches and marine resources, both locally and worldwide. This year Coastweeks in the Virgin Islands will be celebrated with activities running from Saturday, Sept. 20, through Friday, Oct. 31. VIMAS will assist local groups, clubs and schools to organize and conduct shoreline and underwater cleanups. This year VIMAS is partnering with the VI Waste Management Authority, which will transport and dispose of trash collected during the effort. Individuals who wish to organize or participate in Coastweeks events should call Marcia Taylor on St. Croix at (340) 692-4046 or send email to mtaylor@uvi.edu. Interested persons on St. Thomas should call Howard Forbes Jr. at (340) 513-7203 or send email to hforbes20@hotmail.com.
