UVI Chemistry Club Sponsoring Essay Contest for High School Students on St. Thomas

The UVI American Chemical Society Chemistry Club on the St. Thomas Campus is sponsoring an essay contest for students in grades 10-12 at schools on St. Thomas. The essay theme is “What does Chemistry mean to me?" Participants are expected to describe ways – major and minor – in which chemistry is incorporated in their everyday lives. The essays should express how chemistry, known as the central science, will influence their careers and other endeavors in the future. Essays should be 500 to 700 words in length.

The winners of the essay competition will be invited to UVI to participate in a laboratory experiment for beginners and a mixer to award them for their excellence. They will have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Sandra Romano, interim dean of UVI’s College of Science and Mathematics. The will also meet some of the 23 members of the UVI Chemistry Club and UVI faculty members involved in teaching science. Winners will be awarded certificates of excellence and the overall winners in each grade level will receive a $50 monetary gift.

The deadline for submissions is Feb. 3, 2014. All essays should be submitted as an attached Microsoft Word document via e-mail to acschemistryclub@myuvi.net. Entrants must list their name, age, gender, grade and school, along with a 50-word summary of themselves. Three winners will be chosen from each school, one per grade. Winners will be announced on or by Monday, Feb. 10. Contact Chemistry Club President Khalin Nisbett at evania.nisbett@hotmail.com for more information.
