UVI Assistant Professor Dr. Renata Platenberg will showcase her research on local bat species with a public “Meet the Bats” activity at Magens Bay, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. UVI students will volunteer as guides to the various viewing stations during the evening.
Participants will be introduced to behavior, ecology and conservation issues related to local bat species. These include echolocation, bat houses, bat-friendly gardening, and research methods. One station will demonstrate bat research that is being funded by a Judith E. Towle Environmental Studies grant through the VI Community Foundation. At dusk, a guided Bat Walk will allow participants to listen in on bat echolocation calls. The opportunity to meet a live bat, up close and personal, will follow. The event is free and suitable for all ages. Dr. Platenberg has been conducting the popular sessions since 2006. Please bring a flashlight and come prepared for mosquitos. The event will start at Shed 4. For further information, contact Dr. Platenberg at (340) 693-1238, or send email to vi.wildlife@gmail.com.
