Seminar on the Impact of Shore-Based Recreational Fishing on St. Croix Set for Sept. 10
Members of the University Community are invited to attend a seminar presentation on the importance of shore-based recreational fishing on St. Croix at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, in Evans Center Room 401 on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Dr. Theresa L. Goedeke, a social scientist visiting from the Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will make the presentation. The presentation title is: “A Sociological Approach to Understanding the Importance of Shore-based Recreational Fishing on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.” Dr. Goedeke will describe an upcoming research project designed to characterize the shore-based, recreational fishing community on St. Croix, including what kind of fish they catch, how many fish they catch, why they engage in fishing activities, and how important recreational fishing is to their households. The goal is to provide natural resource managers with information to help them to sustainably manage the island’s natural resources in culturally relevant ways.
