The University of the Virgin Islands will host lectures on cutting edge research designed to drastically reduce the occurrence of dengue fever at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, in the Administration and Conference Center’s first floor conference room on the St. Thomas Campus. A second lecture will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the Great Hall of the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Oxitec Limited Chief Executive Officer Hadyn Parry and Oxitec Head of Public Health Research Dr. Derric Nimmo will discuss their research on combating the dengue virus. They plan to genetically engineer mosquitoes to kill the dengue causing mosquito. The UVI Community and the general public are invited to attend.
During the meeting, UVI President Dr. David Hall presented the President’s Appreciation Award to Webmaster Moneca Pinkett and the UVI Website Committee for developing the UVI website which was unveiled in August. Board Chairman Alex Moorhead recognized Alumni Trustee Jacqueline Sprauve, Director of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving Linda Smith, and the Institutional Advancement Component under the leadership of Vice President Dionne Jackson for achieving an alumni giving rate of 52 percent.
The meeting followed the formal unveiling of the new home of UVI’s College of Science and Mathematics on the Albert A. Sheen campus. Tours of the new facility, which is housed in the new UVI RTPark building, followed a brief opening ceremony.
