UVI 'Fall Fest' Scheduled for Today (Thursday, Sept. 27) on St. Thomas Campus
Current and prospective UVI students are invited to explore the broad array of academic and extracurricular programs that UVI has to offer at the St. Thomas campus Fall Fest 2012. This year's theme is "Gateway to Golden Opportunities." It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 27), at the Sports and Fitness Center. Fall Fest will feature the Annual Health Fair; a Student Activities Fair with clubs, organizations and a voter's registration drive; and an Open House for prospective students. The Health Fair will run until 4 p.m.

Miss UVI Ivory Carter to Compete for Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Title
Miss UVI Ivory Carter has joined 21 other campus queens representing many of the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to compete for the title of Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame in Atlanta. The queens competition is part of a larger National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation Weekend Conference underway from Sept. 26-30. The competition will showcase young women who, while pursuing their academic goals, also work in their communities to promote various national and international causes. Preliminary rounds of competition are set for Sept. 27 and 28. The final competition and crowing of the 2012 Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame takes place from 7 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 29.
UVI Alumni Have Just Days to Make Giving History; Deadline is Sept. 30
In a last major push to reach a historic 50 percent alumni giving rate, the University of the Virgin is reaching out to all its alumni to make a gift by Sept. 30. UVI President Dr. David Hall challenged alumni to raise the alumni giving rate to 50 percent, in honor of UVI's 50th anniversary, through what was named the 50 for 50 Campaign. If that goal is reached, UVI will be the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to hold that distinction.
Because of good alumni response to initiatives held throughout the year, UVI is now at a 40 percent alumni giving rate and has less than a week left to meet the 50 percent goal. A total of 601 additional alumni must make a donation for the goal to be met. Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs Director Linda I. Smith said she is optimistic. The College Access Challenge Grant to Host Scholarship Workshop at UVI on Sept. 29
UVI's College Access Challenge Grant will sponsor a scholarship workshop for the public by noted lecturer and author Marianne Ragins on Saturday, Sept. 29. The workshops are open to all high school students and their families who are seeking assistance in searching for and preparing applications for scholarships. Sessions will be held on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix. Three-hour scholarship workshop sessions are slated from 9 a.m. to noon in the Great Hall on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Another session will run from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus.
Ragins is the founder and president of The Scholarship Workshop and sponsor of the Ragins/Braswell National Scholarship. Her work in the field has helped many students secure thousands of dollars in scholarship support. The workshops on Saturday will include resources for uncovering scholarship opportunities, guidelines for writing winning personal essays, tips on using the Internet to find scholarship sources, tips on how to get the best recommendations, coaching on how individuals can sell themselves during scholarship interviews and strategies for getting funds for college. UVI Soccer Squad Falls to UPR-Bayamon; Home Matchup with UPR-Carolina Set Saturday, Sept. 29
UVI's Men's Soccer team dropped its home matchup with UPR-Bayamon, 3-2, on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The Bucs will take on UPR-Carolina in their final home game of the first part of the 2012 season at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Paul E. Joseph Stadium in Frederiksted. The squad is now 1-4-1 on the season. A news series of matches with schools in the LAI league's western section begins Oct. 6.

DRI, UVI to Host Forum on Homelessness in St. Thomas; Public and Volunteers Invited
The public is invited to attend a forum titled "Supporting Homeless Providers to Build Capacity" sponsored by St. Thomas' Downtown Revitalization, Inc. (DRI) in partnership with the University of the Virgin Islands. The forum takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The forum is a grassroots effort to facilitate support of St. Thomas's homeless providers.
Participants will express ideas, join resources, share recognition and otherwise redouble their commitment to St. Thomas' homeless population - a critical element in the effort to revitalize the downtown area. DRI's goal is to encourage homeless service providers as they assist the most vulnerable, long-term homeless individuals and families to attain permanent, supportive housing.
Presentations are planned by DRI, the Department of Human Services, the United Way of St. Thomas-St. John, Catholic Charities, COAST and the Salvation Army. UVI Writing Center on St. Croix Sets First Workshop on Subject-Verb Agreement for Oct. 1
The UVI Writing Center on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix in MB 104 is planning to conduct workshops on areas that pose the most problems for students, such as subject-verb agreement, Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA) formats, and sentence structure and development.
The first workshop, on subject-verb agreement, is scheduled for noon to 12:50 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1, in Room 716 of Evans Center. Students who would like to arrange individual tutorials on subject-verb agreement should attend the workshop, or visit the Writing Center. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Professors are asked to suggest other areas of concern to the center. Students are strongly encouraged to work with the center consistently, rather than only when they are in crisis. Send suggested topics for workshops via email to Writing Center Director Valerie Combie at vcombie@live.uvi.edu.

'Women Empower' Candidates' Forum Set Oct. 4 at UVI on St. Croix
The University of the Virgin Islands Albert A. Sheen Campus Kappa Gamma student organization will host a "Women Empower" forum at UVI's Great Hall, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4. The forum is for all women in political office and female candidates seeking public office. The purpose of the forum is to provide an opportunity for the University community, human service advocates, community service organizations and the community as a whole to meet the women candidates and express concerns on issues that affect women. Included will be discussions on women's health, energy, crime, education, women's participation in politics and other legislative subject matter. This forum will provide the candidates an opportunity to express their positions on funding, priorities and solutions to these critical and pressing issues. UVI-RTPark Offering Used Ford Freestyle for Bid; Submission Deadline Oct. 5
The UVI RTPark will be accepting sealed bids for a one-owner, 2005 Ford Freestyle vehicle. Bid documents may be obtained from the RTPark or requested via email (mmiller@uvirtpark.com) between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Oct. 1 to 5.
The vehicle will be sold as-is (no warranty), and is located at the RTPark offices on the St. Croix campus, at the dorm complex (the first completed building) on the right side of the Royal Palm entrance drive. Only sealed bids will be accepted, and must be delivered to the RTPark office no later than 3:00 pm, Friday, October 5, 2012.
The unsealing of the bids will occur the week of Oct. 8. Within three business days after the unsealing, the successful highest bidder will be notified by telephone and/or mail. VIUCEDD to Host 9th Voices That Count Policy Forum Oct. 11-12
The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will host the 9th annual Voices That Count policy forum entitled "An Inclusive Workforce is a Strong Workforce." During the forum, people with disabilities and their families, along with concerned community members will have an opportunity to solicit the views of those seeking to represent the Virgin Islands in the U.S. Congress and the territorial legislature.
This event will be held on St. Thomas on Oct 11 and 12, at UVI's Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, the forum will take place on Oct. 15 and 16, in the Great Hall on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus. Both activities will run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is no fee for the event, but space is limited and registration is required. World Food Day Set for Oct. 14 on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix
October on St. Croix means it's time for World Food Day at UVI. This year's event is slated for noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, on the grounds of the Albert A. Sheen Campus. The theme is "Agricultural Cooperatives: Key to Feeding the World." As always, World Food Day will include a food vendors' court, a farmer's market, workshops, field tours, seedling distribution, a petting zoo for children, music and a variety of competitions.
Top on the competitions list is the fifth annual Youth Super Chef Competition. There will also be a Banana Splash Competition for the general public. Workshops will focus on the banana family, cassava and chicken. Workshop participants will receive free samples of dishes featuring these crops.
This year's entertainment will feature the Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra, DJ Porter and performances by the St. Croix Martial Arts and the Ay Ay Cultural Dance Company. There is no entry fee. Everyone attending is asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the day's food drive.
The St. Croix event is part of a worldwide activity observed each October designed to increase awareness and understanding of hunger issues, while provoking year-around action to alleviate hunger. 29th St. Thomas-St. John Ag Fair Set Nov. 3-4; Booklet Articles and Ads Needed by Oct. 19
The 29th Annual St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 3-4, on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Vendor applications can be obtained from the V.I. Department of Agriculture offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix, UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, Sea Chest and the Natural Livity Kulcha Shop. The deadline for submitting AgFair Booklet articles and advertising copy is Oct. 19.

VI-EPSCoR 'Living On Earth III' Workshop to Attract Representatives from 29 States
VI-EPSCoR will host a four-day "Living on Earth III" (LOE III) workshop, from Oct. 23 to 26, on St. Thomas. Approximately 50 Individuals representing all 29 EPSCoR states and jurisdictions have been invited.
The workshop will address the need for effective integration of processes that link scientific knowledge and analytical approaches in social-ecological systems research. It will continue the work of the two previous workshops (LOE I and II) which were organized and hosted by Alaska EPSCoR, in 2009 and 2011. The Virgin Islands workshop will focus on conceptualizing Social-Ecological Systems science in the context of small, yet critical communities and ecosystems with challenging human dimensions. OIRP Concludes 2012 Freshman Survey; Extends Thanks to Participants
UVI's Office of Institutional Research and Planning (OIRP) has announced the close of the administration of the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) 2012 Freshman Survey. The department specifically expressed a special note of thanks to the faculty (full-time and part-time) for their willingness to administer the survey during valuable class time. Another special note of thanks was issued to each student who freely took the time to complete the survey. Everyone played an essential role in ensuring the success of this project.
The report will help UVI administrators to better understand the needs of students and to use their experiences to improve and provide better educational services. The report will be posted on the UVI website when participating institutions receive their results, in mid-December.
UVI Mourns the Death of Alumnus and Graduate Student
The University of the Virgin Islands mourns the death of UVI alumnus and graduate student David R. Payne, Jr. Payne earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from UVI in elementary education this past May and was enrolled in UVI's Master of Arts in Education program on the St. Thomas campus. In 2011, he earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in criminal justice. Payne was killed in front of his Annas Retreat home on St. Thomas on the night of Sept. 7. UVI Student Competition Promotes Role Swap with President; Winners Get $1,000 Scholarship
Ever wondered what it would be like to be President of the University of the Virgin Islands?
If you had a chance, what would you say or do to make a difference in the lives of UVI students, faculty and staff? UVI's first President for a Day Competition will give two UVI students - one on St. Thomas and one on St. Croix - an opportunity to trade places for one day with UVI President Dr. David Hall. All UVI students are eligible for the competition.
During the Fall 2012 semester, President Hall will swap roles with one UVI student on St. Thomas. The contest will shift to the Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix during the Spring 2013 semester. The winning students will also receive $1,000 scholarships. The deadline for entering the competition on St. Thomas is Oct. 1, 2012. The deadline on St. Croix will be Feb. 7, 2013.

The final public event of UVI's 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee celebrations will be Golden Gala fundraisers on St. Thomas and St. Croix. On St. Thomas the Golden Gala will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Marriott Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Resort. CLEP Dates Set on St. Thomas Campus
Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Fall 2012 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP will be administered on Sept. 28, Oct. 10, Oct. 23, Nov. 8, and Nov. 16, 2012, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center. Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on each test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or Federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. The cost associated with CLEP is $80.00 per test (payable to College Board) and an additional administrative fee of $15.00 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card; cash will not be accepted. Students can email cmorris@live.uvi.edu for additional information.

During first-level training, participants will learn to log-in to SharePoint, utilize the page edit menu, navigate the tool bar menus to edit a page, layout a page, make a table, preview a webpage and publish a webpage. Tips to ease webpage maintenance will be shared throughout the training. Second-level training participants will learn to upload graphics, forms and brochures into their respective websites. If time permits, the trainer will show participants how to use Microsoft Picture Manager to edit and resize images. Participants should bring a jump drive with text, graphics and other files for posting online.

Faculty Encouraged to Complete Survey on 'Faculty Research Interest'
The Office of the Provost and the Office of Sponsored Programs are working on a revision of the University's Directory on Faculty Research Interest and Scholarly Work. In the recent memo of Aug. 31 from President David Hall to the University community, Dr. Hall emphasized the importance of grants and contracts to the advancement of the University. The revision of the directory will serve to assist the Office of Sponsored Programs in identifying possible funding sources that may be of interest to faculty.
All full-time teaching and research faculty are encouraged to complete a survey that will assist in updating the directory. It is available in UVI's myCampus web portal in the Public Announcements folder under the UVI Projects tab, and from this direct link. The survey should be submitted to Dr. Angela McGhee at amcghee@live.uvi.edu, by Oct. 8.
Computer Literacy Exam Testing Schedule Now Available Online
The exam text schedule for the upcoming Computer Literacy Exams (CLE) at UVI is now available. Students must register for the CLE via Banweb. The examination is online, and will be administered via Blackboard. All sections of the CLE must be completed and passed in order to receive a passing grade. Students must bring current photo ID to the testing room for verification.

The Caribbean Writer Publishes Volume 26; Dedicated to Nature and Ecology
The University of the Virgin Islands continues the celebration of its 50th Anniversary with the release of Volume 26 of its international literary gem, The Caribbean Writer, a volume dedicated to nature and overflowing with brilliant writing and art in celebration of the natural environment.
Volume 26 boasts literary content that covers a number of genres, including poetry, personal essays, short stories and book reviews. The visually stunning cover art by Amy Laskin, from Jamaica, features a detailed painting of a croton set into a pristine, verdant, Caribbean landscape.

Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours to Highlight Labor Today (Sept. 27)
The VI Department of Labor's VI Electronic Workforce System, the VI Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) and several of the Department of Labor's training/service providers will be highlighted at a St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event at 5:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 27) at the VI SBDC Training Center in Nisky Center. The informative networking session will feature updates on services that are available to the business community.

Intro to Word is Next Course in UVI-CELL Basic Computer Series on St. Thomas and St. Croix
Individuals interested in getting the most of their computing experience can take advantage of a computer training series of one-day courses being offered by the University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. The Basic Computing Skills Series covers a wide range of topics to include: the Internet, setting up email and getting the most out of office productivity software such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Publisher.
The next course in the series - Introduction to Word 2010, will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. Sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus and in North West Wing Room 133 on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a six-week, classroom course designed to prepare teachers to take and pass the Praxis II exam. The course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on six Saturdays - Sept. 22 and 29, and Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27. The course will use clear explanations, numerous examples, and graphics and animation, to prepare teachers to take the Praxis II test. October Course to Focus on Getting the Most of Your Smart Phone or Tablet
Smart phones and tablets - the latest technological advances - are designed to make lives easier, but the novice user can be overwhelmed. To unravel the mystery of these devices, the UVI Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will conduct a course to help novice users understand their devices and use their capabilities to the fullest.
Although titled Mastering Your iPhone/iPad, the course is open to individuals with any smart phone or tablet device. The three-week course will be held 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning on Oct. 8. The cost is $150 for 15 hours of instruction. Students will learn to master basic features and functions, efficiently operate their devices, integrate apps into their daily lives, sync with other devices and other applications, and personalize their devices.
