UVI Alerts Public of Unauthorized Solicitations
The University of the Virgin Islands is alerting the community of unauthorized solicitations being made using the University's name. UVI received several calls from businesses in the Crown Bay area of St. Thomas, seeking to confirm whether a UVI student was authorized to collect cash for a new aquatic or marine center. No plans are under way at UVI to build a new aquatic or marine center. Any such solicitations are fraudulent and should be reported to the Virgin Islands Police Department or to UVI's Security Department at (340) 693-1530.
"There are no plans for UVI to build an aquatic center at this time and even if such plans were under way, we would never task students with the responsibility of fundraising for a capital project by collecting cash from businesses," said UVI's Vice President for Institutional Advancement Dionne V. Jackson. "We thank the representatives from the businesses who brought this matter to our attention," Jackson added. For more information about legitimate fundraising campaigns at UVI, call Mitchell Neaves at (340) 693-1046 or (340) 693-1040.
