UVI Begins Celebration of Golden Jubilee Year with Receptions
UVI's celebration of its Golden Jubilee year gets into full swing today, with the first of three Golden Jubilee kick off receptions at the St. John Academic Center. The reception - to which all members of the UVI community have been invited - will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Alexander A. Moorhead, Jr., chair of the UVI Board of Trustees, will be joined by President Dr. David Hall, UVI past presidents and their representatives, and governmental leaders representing the 29th Legislature and the Governor's Office in making formal presentations.
Similar receptions are scheduled on the St. Thomas campus on Thursday, Jan. 26, and on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix on Friday, Jan. 27. The theme for the Golden Jubilee is "Honoring Our Past - Creating Our Future."
A wide variety of additional Golden Jubilee events is being planned, giving students, alumni, faculty, staff, supporters, friends, and past and current administrators an opportunity to commemorate the University's history, to celebrate its current successes and to plan for the future. The Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands and President David Hall cordially invite all students, faculty and staff to attend Golden Jubilee Receptions Commemorating UVI's 50th Anniversary. The receptions are scheduled as follows: St. John Academic Center - Wednesday, Jan. 25; St. Thomas UVI Sports and Fitness Center - Thursday, Jan. 26; and St. Croix UVI Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on Friday, Jan. 27. All receptions will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The attire is island elegant.

'We Are UVI' Web Project Available from UVI Homepage; Submissions

As part of the University's celebration of its 50th anniversary, the UVI website now includes a special, weekly feature titled "We Are UVI." In it, individuals who have had a close affiliation with the institution at some point in the last 50 years will share their memories and experiences. A new submission is being featured each week during 2012.
This week's entry was posted Jan. 22. It is from someone well known to the UVI community. Can you identify who it is from the accompanying photo? The entry joins previous submissions from Sinclair Wilkinson ('72), Rafe Boulon, Jr. ('76) and Carmie Thompson ('10).
"We Are UVI" can be viewed from a link at the top, right on the UVI homepage - www.uvi.edu - or from this direct link. Interested individuals can add their own comments to any submissions. They are also encouraged to share the "We Are UVI" page via e-mail and social media links which accompany each entry. Narratives and photos are still being assembled for the ongoing project. UVI's School of Education is a Candidate for Accreditation
The most prestigious national accrediting body for teacher education has granted the University of the Virgin Islands School of Education candidacy for accreditation. At its October 2011 meeting, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) approved the University's application for NCATE candidacy. Candidacy is the status granted to a professional education unit after it has successfully completed a candidacy review of preconditions conducted by the Unit Accreditation Board of NCATE.
"The unit's successful completion of the NCATE candidacy review has come as no surprise," said UVI's School of Education Interim Dean Dr. Linda Thomas. "The School of Education has long been recognized for preparing high-quality school professionals. In fact, through its excellent programs and highly competent instructors, the School of Education has dedicated itself to preparing P-12 (primary through 12th grade) teachers and school professionals that are capable of competing with the best," she said. Groundbreaking Ceremony for UVI Soccer Field Scheduled Jan 27
Members of the University Community are invited to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for UVI's new soccer field on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27. The activity will take place behind the outdoor basketball court.
Church of the Holy Spirit to Honor President Hall on Jan. 29
UVI President David Hall will be honored and will serve as the keynote speaker at the second annual Dean Gibbs Benefit Gala scheduled for 1 to 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29 at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas. Proceeds from the Gala will support the continued construction and furnishing of the Church of the Holy Spirit complex - a multi-purpose community center, which will offer senior citizen day-care programs, after-school educational and recreational programs for young people, health advocacy, a variety of other outreach services, and worship services. The facility is being constructed on the West End of St. Thomas.

UVI Theatre Issues Casting Call Production Planned in March
UVI Theatre has issued a casting call for auditions for actors to appear in the mid-March world premiere of Tiphanie Yanique's "Kill The Rabbits." The play is adapted and directed by David Edgecombe. Auditions are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 26, 27 and 31. The venue is to be determined. The play calls for nine actors and any number of revelers/dancers for a Carnival Parade scene. Auditions are open to all members of the UVI community and members of the greater community. College credit is available for participation.
The cast includes Cooper - a 28-year-old man who has spent the last 12 years in jail (must also be able to play himself at 16), Xica - a 30-year-old woman who steals the hearts of men, Herman - a young white-American man who falls under the enchantment of Xica, Cooper's mom - a police officer, Herman's Dad - a retired professor who now owns a bar on St. John, Dutch - Herman's "Frenchy" friend, Director - the director of the Crushers Carnival troupe, Guard - the guard at Herman's parent's home, Sexy - a hoodlum, revelers and dancers. Also needed are a sound designer, costume designer and someone to prepare an audio/video production.

Register Now for 'MAN-UP' Male Empowerment Conference Feb. 7 & 9
The University of the Virgin Islands, the Virgin Islands Department of Education and the Virgin Islands Department of Human Services will host the second annual MAN-UP Male Empowerment Conference on UVI's St. Croix campus on Tuesday, Feb. 7, and on UVI's St. Thomas campus on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012. The theme of the conference is "MAN-UP: Realize your Potential - Celebrating Responsible Manhood."
In 2011, more than 3,000 young men from throughout the territory participated in the first MAN-UP Conference. The discussion themes for this year's conference will be delivered utilizing a multimedia stage play, "Real Men Talking," directed by Flemuel "Fleetwood" Brown, III. The play depicts five African American men talking about accountability, sex, relationships, self-esteem, incarceration, the falsehood of the streets, insecurities, fatherhood, mentoring, and history, just to name a few.

VIUCEDD to Offer American Sign Language Class Beginning Feb. 27
The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will offer a ten week class in American Sign Language starting Feb. 27. Classes will be held in St. Thomas on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the University and in St. Croix on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00-7:15 p.m. at the VIUCEDD office. The Student Health Services Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus is offering a "Stress Relief Hour" program at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. The program offers 10-minute sessions with natural healing and magnetic resonance therapy. The service is free to all students, faculty and staff. Discount Reichhold Center Tickets Available to UVI Students, Faculty, Staff
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts offers special discount ticket rates for UVI students, faculty and staff. Buy individual tickets for select performances in the Reichhold Center Foundation Series and receive $10 off each ticket. Discounts are limited to two tickets per person per show. Purchase tickets for packages of four or five shows in the Foundation Series and receive $12 off each ticket (a savings of $8 to $60). Discounts are limited to two packages per person. Discount tickets are only available for seats in the uncovered section. They cannot be combined with other discounts and apply only to new ticket purchases.
Seaborne Reservation Update Requires UVI Travelers to Obtain Tickets Before Making Reservations
Seaborne Airlines has informed the UVI Purchasing Office that an update to its reservation system now requires that UVI travelers obtain tickets from Purchasing prior to making their reservations. 'The Caribbean Writer' Issues Call for Cover Art; Deadline Feb. 29
"The Caribbean Writer" - the international, literary anthology published by the University of the Virgin Islands - is soliciting colorful, eye-catching, Caribbean artwork for the cover of its upcoming issue. This issue, Volume 26 of the celebrated journal, will be dedicated to the environment, with the theme: Nature and Ecology.
Artists who want their work to be considered for use should submit it in vertical orientation, in either TIFF or JPG format, with a resolution of 300 dpi or greater. Black and white art (line drawings, sketches, block prints, etc.) is also needed for use inside the 300-page publication. Vertical orientation is also preferred for these submissions. Please include all necessary contact information and a brief biographical note with art submissions and email to submit@thecaribbeanwriter.org. The deadline for artwork submission is Feb. 29, 2012. UVICELL to Offer QuickBooks Class Beginning Feb. 4 on St. Thomas
The University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer a course for individuals and small businesses interested in learning to use the full-featured small business accounting software - QuickBooks. Introduction to QuickBooks will be held 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays beginning Feb. 4, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus. Participants will learn to set up standard lists of accounts, to manage accounts receivable and payable, to reconcile bank accounts, track credit card transactions and more.
