CATS, Brothers With a Cause Sponsoring Academic Jam on St. Thomas, St. Croix

The UVI CATS Center and Brothers With a Cause are conducting Academic Jams on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix. They are designed to help students prepare for Spring Semester final exams. The Academic Jam began on Monday, April 16, and continues through Friday, May 4.

On St. Thomas, sessions are held in Room 118 of the CA Building. Click here to view the St. Thomas Academic Jam Schedule. For more details, visit the CATS Center in the CA Building or call (340) 693-1226.

Summer 2012 Financial Aid Update

UVI's Office of Financial Aid has announced the release of the Summer 2012 Financial Aid Guidelines and the Summer Aid Application form. UVI Selected as Tom Joyner Hercules Scholarship Recipient for June 2012; Applications Available

The University of the Virgin Islands has been selected as the recipient of the Tom Joyner Hercules Scholarship for the month of June, 2012. Applications are available in UVI Financial Aid Offices on the St. Thomas campus and on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Winners of the $1,500 scholarship will be announced every Thursday throughout the month of June.

Applicants must be fulltime undergraduate students with a demonstrated financial need and a 2.5 or better grade point average. Complete requirements for the Tom Joyner Foundation Hercules Scholarship are available from the Financial Aid Offices. The application deadline is May 1, 2012. All application packets must be submitted to UVI's Financial Aid Office.

UVI Carnival T-Shirts Available at UVI Bookstores on St. Thomas, St. Croix

UVI Golden Jubilee Carnival T-shirts are now available for purchase at the UVI bookstore on both campuses. The Carnival Parade Committee urges everyone to "get in the carnival spirit as we 'Honor Our Past for the World to See, Celebrating UVI's Golden Jubilee.'" Persons unable to join the troupe are encouraged to wear a UVI Carnival 2012 t-shirt on parade day to support the troupe and show school spirit as the troupe marches in the 60th Anniversary VI Carnival Adult's Parade on Saturday, April 28.

4-H Seeks UVI Support in King and Queen of the Band Competition

UVI's Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Youth Program will participate in the Virgin Islands Carnival 2012. Jonori Benjamin and Raynel Maynard, two members of the 4-H Youth Program, will compete in the King and Queen of the Band Competition for the titles of Junior King and Queen of the Band. The event is free and will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, in Lionel Roberts Stadium. Members of the UVI family are invited to attend the competition in support of the 4-H contenders.

Additionally, the 4-H Youth Program will participate in the Children's Parade on April 27. This year's participation marks the program's 21st Children's Parade entry. All costumes for this year's Carnival 2012 participation were designed by Lisa Durity Mollineau of Trinidad.

The 4-H program aims to help develop knowledge, life skills, cultural awareness and positive attitudes of children in the Virgin Islands. For details call the Cooperative Extension Service at 693-1080.

UVI Fashion Show Set April 21 on St. Croix

UVI's 2012 Spring Fashion Show on St. Croix is scheduled for 8 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, at the John H. Woodson Auditorium. Tickets are available at the UVI Bookstore. Admission is: $35 for VIP, general $20, students with ID $12.

48th Academic Awards Program Scheduled on St. Thomas on April 22

The University of the Virgin Islands will conduct the 48th Academic Awards program on St. Thomas at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, at the Sports and Fitness Center. The St. Croix awards were presented on April 15.

These programs recognize the students who are among the best in business, education, liberal arts, social sciences, nursing, science and mathematics. Scholarships are awarded and honor society students are recognized for outstanding achievement. The UVI community and the general public are encouraged to attend and support the students as UVI continues its celebration of the 50th Golden Jubilee.

UVI Music Students Schedule Recital on St. Thomas for Sunday, April 22

Solar Energy Town Hall Meetings Scheduled April 23, 25

UVI will conduct Town Hall Meetings on both campuses to outline plans for on-campus solar energy projects as part of the University's Going Green Initiative. The meetings will feature UVI Energy Manager Courtney Mayes and President Dr. David Hall discussing the project and answering questions. A summary of the sessions will also be made available on UVI's myCampus portal following the meetings.

ROTC to Offer Officer Symposium on St. Thomas Campus on April 24

The UVI Senior Reserve Officer Training (ROTC) Program will host an officer symposium from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24. The symposium will focus on career opportunities and benefits, and provide a greater awareness of how ROTC works. The guest speaker will be Major Sally Petty. RTPark Schedules Executive Committee Meeting for April 25

St. Thomas Campus Bookstore Sets Book Buyback Period

The UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus has announced that a Book Buyback Period has been scheduled for April 30 through May 4, and again on May 7. Buy Back hours will be 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Students must present a student ID to participate. A Bookstore receipt is needed and textbooks will be inspected for condition. UVI Schedules Summer Class in Website Creation

UVI will offer a new class on How to Create a Website during the upcoming summer session. The class will cover all phases of setting up a web site. Students will have a chance to secure their own URL (a web address like www.yoursite.com), secure hosting for the site and develop the pages that will be seen by everyone. Creating the art, music, backgrounds and the message are all part of this class. No prior experience is assumed when it comes to creating a web site. UVI Master of Arts in Psychology Program Accepting Applications for Fall Semester

The University of the Virgin Islands Master of Arts in Psychology with a Counseling Concentration Program is accepting applications for the 2012 Fall Semester. The program is designed to provide students with the necessary academic knowledge base, problem solving skills, and experiential opportunities to work in a variety of social service and counseling settings. Energy Conference to Focus on Renewable Technologies, Lowering WAPA Bills Set April 30-May 1

The public is invited to a two-day Distributed Energy Grid Conference at the University of the Virgin Islands on April 30 and May 1. The conference is designed to share information on renewable technologies that would allow the V.I. Government lower WAPA (Water and Power Authority) bills. The conference - hosted by UVI's Caribbean Green Technology Center (CGTC) - will consist of a trade exposition from 1 to 5 p.m. each day, followed by presentations from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The sessions will be held at the Administration and Conference Center on St. Thomas and available via videoconference on St. Croix (location to be announced.). The effort is sponsored by the Caribbean Green Technology Center, Senators Craig Barshinger and Sammuel Sanes, and the Virgin Islands Energy Office. 5th Annual Autism Conference Slated for April 18 and 20

The University of the Virgin Islands-Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will host the 5th Annual Autism Conference, with sessions on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The conference's keynote presentation, titled "Autism Spectrum Disorder: Current Approaches to Supports and Interventions," will be presented Dr. Patricia Towel of the Westchester Institute for Human Development. Additional sessions are titled Understanding Behavior and How to Address the Challenges of Autism Spectrum Disorders in the School Setting; and Assistive Technology Supports and Solutions for Learners with Autism Spectrum disorders.

The conference will be held on Wednesday, April 18, in the Administrative and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus and on April 20, 2012 at the University of the Virgin Islands Great Hall on St. Croix from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Meals will be provided.

CSAP Announces April 'Gatherings' Schedule for St. Croix - April 18, St. Thomas - April 19

UVI's Center for the Study of Spirituality and Professionalism (CSAP) invites members of the University community to participate in its April "Gatherings" session. Gatherings are a series of monthly informal conversations centered on themes which reflect the work of the Center.

The first activity will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, on the grounds of the Great House on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Psychologist Dr. Migdalia Brathwaite will lead a conversation centered on the theme of "The Wealth of our Personal Resources." Dr. Brathwaite, a counseling psychologist known for using creative methods to effect lifestyle changes, will encourage participants to take stock, to identify and value the resources they command, particularly as we confront a challenging economy. This conversation will provide an opportunity for participants to think about personal resources, with money being only one component of the package.

The discussion series continues from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, on the St. Thomas campus where Business Professor Eustace Esdaille will lead a similar conversation on the patio of the Administration and Conference Center. Dr. Esdaille will draw on his accounting, instructional and writing experiences and those as executive director of the University's new Center for Student Success, where identifying, developing and maximizing personal resources are all relevant themes.

UVI-CES to Conduct Weight Management Workshop on April 20

The University of the Virgin Islands' 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program of the Cooperative Extension Service (CES) will conduct a free Weight Management Workshop from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 20. The workshop is slated in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The presenter will be Dr. Caryl Johnson, program supervisor for the 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program.

Scholarships Available for Advanced Degrees, Cultural Projects

The Board of Directors of the Virgin Islands Academic & Cultural Awards Endowment (VIACAE) Scholarship is accepting applications through May 4, 2012 for its scholarship program. Virgin Islands residents pursuing advanced degrees (J.D., M.D., or other doctorate degrees) or cultural projects are encouraged to apply for the Virgin Islands Academic & Cultural Awards Endowment Scholarship.

Created by the Virgin Islands Legislature in 1970, this program provides financial support to eligible V.I. residents to advance their academic and professional studies, and also to eligible V.I. residents engaged in cultural projects that will benefit the people of the Virgin Islands. Recipients may receive up to $10,000 per year. This is a V.I. territorial scholarship program that is administered by the University of the Virgin Islands.

Intramural Sports - Table Tennis and Water Sports - Available to Students, Staff, Faculty

UVI's St. Thomas Intramural Program is offering several opportunities for UVI students, staff and faculty to get active and have fun. All activities are free of charge. Events and times:

  • Table Tennis League - Both Male and Female Divisions are conducted. The Table Tennis League will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 10 p.m. in the mezzinine of in the Sports and Fitness Center arena. Play dates are April 10, 12, 17, 19, 24 and 26.
  • Splash Fridays. This is a chance to paddle a kayak, experience snorkeling or try the new sport of Stand Up Paddle Boarding - (SUP). Equipment and lessons will be provided on April 13, 20 and 27, at the MacLean Marine Science Center dock from approximately 3 p.m. until dark.

Prospective 2012 UVI Graduates Required to Complete Exit Interview

All prospective graduates of UVI's Class of 2012 are asked to visit the Office of Institutional Advancement and complete a UVI Exit Interview. The interview is mandatory and focuses on the UVI experience.

Online Registration for UVI's 2012 Summer Sessions Now Available

Online registration is now available for UVI's 2012 Summers Sessions I and II.

Summer I Classes are scheduled from Monday, May 14 through Monday, June 18. In-person registration will be available on May 10-11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Summer II Classes are scheduled from Thursday, June 21 - Friday, July 27. In-person registration will be available on June 19-20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

UVI Looking for Historic UVI Photos for Golden Jubilee Publication

UVI is seeking historic photos from alumni, faculty, students and the general public for a book that will celebrate the University's 50th Golden Jubilee. Examples would be photos from sporting events, class activities, dormitories and queen contests. Early photos from the 1960s through 1980s are especially needed. Clearly labeled originals should be brought to the UVI Public Relations Office, Room 229 of the Administration and Conference Center, on the St. Thomas campus, and to The Caribbean Writer office, on the St. Croix campus. They may also be mailed to UVI Public Relations, #2 John Brewers Bay, St. Thomas, V.I., 00802.

All photos will be returned. Please attach labels to the back of photos with contact, as well as complete descriptive, information. High resolution scans (full size at 300 dpi) are especially welcome and should be sent to uvijubilee@gmail.com. Photo credit and special thanks will be included in the book. Submissions for UVI Golden Jubilee Time Capsules Sought

Submissions of ideas for commemorative items to be placed in UVI Golden Jubilee time capsules on both campuses are sought by the Time Capsule Subcommittee of UVI's Golden Jubilee Committee.

Contributions will be accepted from UVI students, alumni, departments and staff members through Oct. 31. Please submit items to be considered for inclusion in the time capsule. Indicate the contributor's name, department and campus, and include contact information. Items can be mailed or dropped off as follows:
