The University of the Virgin Islands Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees the institutions animal care and use program and is responsible for reviewing all applications involving the use of animals for teaching and research purposes. The IACUC ensures that animal research is conducted in compliance with applicable federal regulations and institutional policies.
The Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs serves as the Institutional Official and appoints members to the Institutional Animal and Care Use Committee. The IACUC is composed of UVI faculty, staff, a veterinarian, and a community member.
Applications are submitted for IACUC review through IRBNet.org. The IACUC convenes meetings on an as needed basis to review applications.
The Office of Sponsored Programs subscribes to the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Program (CITI) to provide the required training to researchers and IACUC members on the use of animals in research. To submit an application to the IACUC, student, staff and faculty investigators must have completed the IACUC basic course and the relevant species-specific course.
