The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Emerging Caribbean Scientist Program will host its first visiting scientist speaker for the Fall semester at noon on Aug. 28, 2020, via Zoom. UVI Alumna, Dr. Shana Augustin, will present on the seminar’s title, “Dopamine modulation of corticostriatal plasticity and its behavioral implications.”
Dr. Augustin graduated from UVI in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. Currently, she is a research fellow at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, working in the Laboratory for Integrative Neuroscience.
Dr. Augustin was recently awarded the National Institutes of Health (NIH) BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award. This grant provides funding for the final 1-2 year(s) of training as a fellow and the first three years as an independent research investigator. Her funded research is centered on understanding the cellular and subcellular signaling pathways during the induction of corticostriatal plasticity and during striatal-based behaviors, using genetically encoded sensors and advanced optical techniques. At present, she is searching for tenure-track assistant professor positions.
The visiting scientist speaker initiative is made possible through funding from the NIH Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) grant.
