UVI Celebrates Demin Day on April 29 – Join the Movement!

Denim Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 29, 2020. To celebrate this movement, the University of the Virgin Islands will be creating a video in collaboration with the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Council.

Denim Day started after an Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.

Since then millions of people participate in this movement every year to protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual harassment, abuse, assault, and rape.

If you would like to join this movement, dress-up in your best blue Jeans and record a short video answering these two questions.

  1. What can you do to support survivors of sexual assault?
  2. What should you not say to a victim of sexual assault?

E-mail your short video to nyaila.callwood@uvi.edu by April 27.

Tune-in on Denim Day to see the full video on the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Facebook page.
