UVI students, Mekeda Mills and Azriel Williams, won best poster for their presentations at the Emerging Research National Conference. Mills and Williams went up against 800 student researchers with more than 700 presentations.
Mills’ research was titled “The Blood Traveler: Apicomplexan Blood Parasite of Dusky Damselfish.” Williams’ presentation was titled “Sex, Ideal and Self Body Perceptions, Depression, and Obesity in United States Virgin Islands’ Adolescents.”
“We are very proud of them,” said UVI Provost Dr. Camille McKayle. Approximately 15 UVI students traveled and presented at the conference as well.
ERN is an annual conference that highlights undergraduate research, and is funded through the National Science Foundation and hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). It is focused on those NSF programs in the Division of Human Resource Development that aims to increase the participation of those traditionally underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
