‘State of the Territory: Where Do We Go From Here?’ Panel Discussion Set for Feb. 28

The “State of the Territory: Where Do We Go From Here?” Panel Discussion will be held at 6 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

A recent wave of discussions surrounding conditions in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) has risen. The Office of Student Activities on the Sheen Campus is hosting this discussion to provide a productive, proactive, educational and effective platform for the UVI and wider VI community to discuss their hopes for the USVI.

This panel discussion will include members of the UVI and wider VI community from across the island of St. Croix who will share analysis and perspectives on the conditions of the USVI.  This event will be moderated by Dr. ChenziRa Davis-Kahina, director of UVI’s Virgin Islands Caribbean Cultural Center.

The panelists include:

  • Michael Pemberton, UVI undergraduate student
  • Attorney Genevieve Whitaker, UVI adjunct Instructor and alumna
  • Richard Motta, UVI alumnus
  • Paul Lockhart, community advocate
  • Anumaat Davis-Kahina, UVI VICCC advocate and Miss St. Croix 2015

The UVI and wider St. Croix VI community are encouraged to support, attend and participate in this dialogue amongst millennials that are active workers within the USVI.

UVI faculty are encouraged to attend this event with their students. We realize the impact on the existing class schedule, however research has revealed that engagement in these types of discourse are significant for increased academic excellence and knowledge. In addition, learning outside the classroom increases creativity, makes subjects more relevant, engaging, and exposes students to new ideas. This way, the students will be able to increase their versatility and expertise with expressing themselves about social, cultural, political and economic issues.  Essentially, students will become better acquainted with current events and economics crafted towards the Virgin Islands, and will realize that there are benefits in participating positively in their community.
