University to Host UVI Hackathons on Sept. 9 & 10 on St. Croix; Sept 16 & 17 on St. Thomas

The University of the Virgin Islands will host Hackfest 2016 this fall. This year’s themes is “Health and Wellness.” During UVI’s Hackfest designers, problem solvers and programmers will gather to devise innovative solutions to Health and Wellness issues facing the territory and the world. The event is once again proudly sponsored by NEARiX, organized by UVIDEA, the student-run innovation and entrepreneurship club, and supported by UVI’s RT Park and VI EPSCoR.

Two hackathons are scheduled on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix and the St. Thomas Campus on St. Thomas. See details below:

UVI HackFest – Albert A. Sheen Campus

  • Who - All UVI Students
  • When - Friday, Sept. 9, and Saturday, Sept. 10
  • Time - Friday 5-7 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Where - Library, second floor

UVI HackFest - St. Thomas Campus

  • Who - All UVI Students
  • When – Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17
  • Time - Friday 5-7 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Where - Friday: West Hall Conference Room; Saturday, Paiewonsky Library

Friday’s schedule will include problem identification, an ideation session and team formation/building. On Saturday, the participants will be involved in solution concept creations and give presentations. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. This year, UVI has obtained free licenses to software packages that will allow the creation of concept apps and websites without having to write any code. Hackfest is open to all UVI students.

Hackfest team prizes include:

  • $500 cash for Best Hack
  • $100 cash for Most Innovative Hack
  • $100 cash for Most Impactful Hack

Bookstore gift certificates sponsored by VI-EPSCoR and book prizes will be awarded by the Research and Technology Park.

New Follow-on Program:
Following the hackathons this year, UVI will be launching a new program. The “Health Design Slam” competition where teams will, over several months, create clickable apps and websites related to health and wellness. UVI has obtained free licenses to additional software that will allow the creation of these clickable prototype apps and websites without writing any code. While students participating in the “Health Design Slam” are not required to participate in the hackathons, the hackathons are a great way for student teams to start their exploration of issues and existing applications in the health and wellness space.
