VICCC to Host St. Croix Maroon Sanctuary Lands Commemoration; St. Croix Designation

The Virgin Islands Caribbean Cultural Center (VICCC) at the University of the Virgin Islands in collaboration with St. Croix United for Culture, Community, Environment and Economic Development (SUCCEED) invites the general public to attend a community roundtable for the annual commemoration of the Maroons of St. Croix On Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The commemoration will address “Preserving Maroon Sanctuary Lands and St. Croix’s NHA Designation.” This interactive roundtable will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Great Hall on UVI’s Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.  During the Roundtable, invited discussants include:

Claudette Young-Hinds, president of SUCCEED; Olasee Davis, Cultural Heritage and Research Specialist; and others. Discussants and guests will discuss solutions and long-term activities that honor the Maroon legacy followed by interactive discussions with audience members and community stakeholders.

Since 2012, VI Maroon Commemoration events and proclamations are a call that represents and acknowledges for territory-wide recognition of a significant aspect of our heritage described as SUCCEED as “The Maroon cultural legacy is Crucian...the Maroon spiritual legacy is Universal.” These observances and ceremonies honor the indomitable human spirit that sustained enslaved Africans on St Croix to escape and pursue freedom at any cost.
