Communication disorders are among the most common conditions in adults and children, costing the United States billions annually due to lost work productivity, special education, and medical treatment.
Therefore, VIUCEDD is pleased to join with the Virgin Islands community in celebrating May, Better Hearing and Speech Month. Because of their tireless work, we salute the audiologist(s) and speech-language pathologists who work in our state to bring better hearing and speech to those individuals who are affected by communication disorders.
During this annual observance, we should focus our attention on the needs of our residents who have some form of hearing, speech, or language impairment to ensure that everyone has access to the audiology and speech-language pathology treatment that will help them lead full and productive lives. Please direct any questions related to communication disorders/speech, language, and hearing impairments to Dr. Karen H. Brown at (340) 693-1173 or karen.brown@uvi.edu, associate director, VIUCEDD and associate professor of education CDC’s Act Early Ambassador to the USVI.
