UVI Receives National Recognition for National Alcohol Screening Day Online Participation

The UVI Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS Prevention Program in collaboration with the Counseling and Career Services Office on the St. Thomas Campus and the Student Government Association on the St. Thomas Campus have received national recognition for their participation on National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) in Spring 2015.

Screening for Mental Health, Inc., the pioneer of large-scale mental health screening for the public, awarded UVI a certificate for being in the top ten of online screenings held on National Alcohol Screening Day. UVI held many NASD events for the first time this spring and as part of those activities, students completed a confidential online alcohol screening.

“Your school had some of the highest total screenings nationally for NASD,” said Joanna Karbel, Screening for Mental Health, Inc. program manager in a May 2015 letter. “We congratulate you for making it a priority. The time and energy spent by your organization in promoting and facilitating NASD 2015 is obvious and we applaud the mental health advocacy exemplified by your team.”

According to SMH’s website, the organization believes that online screenings are an effective first step in alcohol use disorder intervention. Similar to other illnesses, early intervention can significantly increase recovery. National Alcohol Screening Day brings attention to the critical needs of those with alcohol use disorders and their families.
