UVI to Offer NABCEP Solar Energy Certification Course

UVI, through the Caribbean Green Technology Center (CGTC), will offer the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) Entry-Level Certification program this summer.  The

program, which is designed specifically for individuals interested in the green and renewable energy field, will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 8-12, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.

“A key aspect of growing the Caribbean solar market is the development of a highly qualified and skilled workforce,” said Dr. Wayne Archibald, director of CGTC. “Our goal is to prepare our own local citizens for employment in the solar industry, not just in the Virgin Islands, but also throughout the entire Caribbean basin.”

The 40-hour program provides a basic understanding of the terms and operational aspects of a photovoltaic or solar heating system. The course can be used as a basis for entry into the industry and can lead to other certifications and employment. Upon successful completion of the course, participants can sit for the NABCEP Entry-Level Exam which demonstrates that they have achieved a basic knowledge of the fundamental principles of the application, design, installation and operation of grid-tied and stand-alone photovoltaic systems or solar heating systems.
