UVI’s Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS Prevention Program is hosting a week of events from t-shirt painting to a “Mocktail Competition” on the St. Thomas campus in recognition of National Alcohol Abuse Awareness Month, which is celebrated in April.
The theme is “Help for Today; Hope for Tomorrow.” The week starts with two sessions testing student knowledge about alcohol, from noon to 1 p.m. at the CA Building, and from noon to 2 p.m. at the cafeteria on Monday, April 7. A third testing session is planned for 5 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, outside the Business Building. Alcohol simulation station using goggles that impair vision to show the effects of drinking are planned for noon to 1 p.m. at the Cafeteria and from 2 to 3 p.m. at the student Activities Center on Tuesday, April 8. On Wednesday, April 9, organizers will offer spray painting of drug-free messages on student –t-shirts and other items (shoes, hats, caps, etc. from noon to 2 p.m. and again from 5 to 7 p.m. outside of the Cafeteria. Bring your own clothing to be paint. A “Mocktail Competition” with student clubs and organizations competing to creating non-alcoholic mixed drinks from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, at the Cafeteria. A “Reach Out – Speak Up” poetry and rap competition will cap the week’s activities at the Cafeteria from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 11. DJs will provide entertainment. Sobriety Pledges will also be made during the afternoon.
