The University of the Virgin Islands will host a memorial service celebrating the life of Dr. Keishiro “Charlie” Matsumoto at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24. The service will take place in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas Campus.
Dr. Matsumoto worked as a finance professor in the School of Business since 1993. He earned a Ph.D. in finance and a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Minnesota, and an MBA from the University of Michigan. He was awarded tenure in 2001 and promoted to full professor in 2006. Charlie, as he was known to his colleagues, was one of the most prolific researchers at the University, having his work published in top financial journals like The Financial Review and Journal of Accounting and Finance. He taught many courses and thus touched the lives and influenced the careers of many UVI students.
After Dr. Matsumoto was hospitalized on Monday, Sept. 8, the School of Business faculty visited him daily and apprised fellow staffers of his condition. After a few days of hospitalization, he was moved to the intensive care unit at the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital and on Sept. 18, at approximately 4 p.m., he succumbed to his illness.
All well-wishers, friends and colleagues are invited to attend the memorial service. More information is available from Dean Aubrey Washington at (340) 692-4151 or awashin@uvi.edu.
