The Virgin Islands Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will conduct its annual “A Walk for Education” (AWFE) on Saturday, March 1, on St. Thomas. Walkers will begin at Emile Griffith Park and conclude at the UVI campus “green” (the Herman E. Moore Golf Course). Along the way, participants will spread the word about the need for more black scientists and engineers in the work place and hand information packets. At the “green,” volunteers will be set up to dish out information on UVI – college admissions tests, how to apply, the admissions process, financial aid, and various University programs. Food, drinks, games and lots of fun activities, including an engineering challenge, are planned. All public schools and some private schools have committed to attending this event.
Dr. Wayne Archibald, director of UVI’s Caribbean Green Technology Center, said the goals of the day are to increase awareness of the opportunities available through education particularly in the STEM – science technology, engineering and mathematics – fields and to shatter myths about African-Americans in math, science, engineering and other technologies. Dr. Archibald is encouraging volunteers from among NSBE members, sororities and fraternities, company representatives, church members and all college students and graduates. For more information, call Dr. Archibald at (340) 693-1158 or send e-mail to warchib@uvi.edu.
