The Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) Program in UVI’s College of Science and Mathematics has announced its activities schedule for the 2014 Spring semester. Several seminars are scheduled. Most notable are two Visiting Scientist Research Seminars which are sponsored by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) and the Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) programs.
The first Visiting Scientist Research Seminar will be presented by Dr. Robert Sekuler at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Dr. Sekuler, who works in the Department of Psychology at Brandeis University, will discuss Cognitive Neuroscience. The other will be presented by Dr. Juan Gilbert on Human Centered Computing at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Dr. Gilbert is with the Computer Science Department at Clemson University. Additionally, a seminar on Environmental Science is planned by UVI Professor Dr. Michael Doyle. Seminars will be presented in Room B-110 on the St. Thomas Campus. Possible videoconference links to the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix are being arranged for the Visiting Scientist seminars. The ECS also announced that the St. Croix Spring Student Research Symposium is set for March 22, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus. The deadline for online registration and the receipt of abstracts is Feb. 21. The deadline for filing online applications for a variety of other ECS programs - including MARC, RISE, HBCUUP, SURE and SSRI programs - is Feb. 28.
