A public discussion on “Colorism in the African/Caribbean/American Culture is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today (Monday, Aug. 19), in the Great Hall on UVI’s Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The discussion is sponsored by UVI’s Virgin Islands Caribbean Cultural Center and itib, LLC. The second of the VICC’s Blacker the Berry Series, the event will focus on these topics: Is Skin Bleaching Part of Our Culture?; Why do we feel the need to lighten or whiten our skin in order to be accepted by Society?; and, What would Blyden, Garvey and Harrison Say? Panelists will include Attorney Emile Henderson III, Narcisse Springer of RunTellDat, Adjoa Claudette Young Hinds of Hinds Unlimited, Senator Terrence Positive Nelson, VICCC Director Chenzira Davis Kahina and Sr. Petra of Nat'ral Xpression, among others.
The evening will include excerpts from videos on African and global skin bleaching and lightening for "beauty," and a look at India's new Dark Is Beautiful 2013 campaign.
