UVI Research and Technology Dedicates 64 West Center on Albert A. Sheen Campus
UVI's Research and Technology Park conducted an official opening/dedication ceremony for its new 64 West Center on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix on Friday, May 31. The two-story building, located near the campus entrance, features a prominent mill structure, an iconic architectural symbol of St. Croix. It will house the RTPark's headquarters and St. Croix offices, and a 50-seat conference center with high-definition audio-visual teleconferencing capabilities. The building is designed to offer state-of-the art data communications and support facilities. The main structure will provide facilities for RTPark tenants. It will also house classrooms, laboratories and faculty offices of UVI's College of Science Mathematics on both floors.
Former UVI Provost Dr. Gwen-Marie Moolenaar Receives Honorary Doctorate
Former University of the Virgin Islands Provost Dr. Gwen-Marie Moolenaar was awarded an honorary doctorate at the College of St. Elizabeth's Commencement Ceremony in May. Dr. Moolenaar returned to her alma mater to give the keynote address at the Colleges' 111th Commencement Ceremony and was pleased to accept a Doctor of Laws Honorary Degree in honor of her more than 30 years of leadership and commitment to higher education. Dr. Moolenaar joined UVI in 1988 as a visiting scientist and quickly advanced to become executive assistant to the president, director of Sponsored Programs, vice president for Institutional Advancement, and later provost. After leaving UVI, she served as head of her high school alma mater, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, until her retirement in 2010. High School Students Sought for Free Summer Business Residency Program at UVI; June 5 Is Deadline to Apply
Applications are being accepted for the Entrepreneur Business Institute (EBI), a free, three-week summer residency program for Virgin Islands high school students at the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus. Sponsored by International Capital & Management Company (ICMC) and hosted by UVI's School of Business, EBI is designed to promote entrepreneurship in the Virgin Islands. The Entrepreneur Business Institute invites students to expand their horizons by providing a comprehensive overview of business development from distinguished UVI faculty members and ICMC corporate partners.
The program begins on June 23, and runs through July 12. It is filled with business classes such as Understanding the VI Economy, Ideation, the Art of Public Speaking, Developing a Winning Business Plan, and Strategizing and Maintaining a Business, to name a few. The program schedule also includes fun activities and a community service project.

Application Deadline Extended to June 14 for UVI, Division of Personnel Certified Public Manager Program
The University of the Virgin Islands' Institute for Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness and the VI Division of Personnel have launched the Virgin Islands Certified Public Manager Program (CPM). The first of its kind in any U.S. territory, the CPM Program is a nationally recognized management development certificate program specifically for managers working in federal, state and local governments, and non-profit organizations.
The application deadline for the first Government of the Virgin Islands cohort of the VI CPM program has been extended to Friday, June 14, 2013. This extension was made due to the large volume of calls the Division of Personnel has been receiving this week from individuals interested in learning about the program.
The program is designed to prepare participants for the challenges and unique demands of the public management profession. Participants will learn seven core competencies, including personal and organizational integrity, managing work, leading people, developing self, systemic integration, public service focus and change leadership. The program will begin on July 9, and will be available on UVI's St. Thomas Campus and the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Free Math Behind the Science Summer Program Offered at UVI; Applications Accepted on Rolling Basis
The Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) Program at the University of the Virgin Islands is accepting applications for Math Behind the Science, an intensive six-week residential summer program designed to ease the transition from high school to college. Math Behind the Science will run from June 17 through July 26, on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The free program is designed to enhance the mathematics preparedness of students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, mathematics, engineering, technology or medicine. Specifically, it will prepare students to take the introductory calculus course and provide a foundation for success in that important course. Program components also include classes in computing, reading, writing and college prep class. There will also be field trips.

UVI Undergrads Sought for Washington Center Internship Program
UVI is seeking undergraduate students to participate in the Washington Center's Internship program for the Fall 2013 semester. The Washington Center's internship program offers academic semesters and summer terms that are tailored to each student's interests and goals, include rigorous academic coursework, and are enhanced through special lectures, and other programming. VI Legislature Seeking UVI Students for Summer Internship Program; Application Deadline June 14
UVI students in good standing are invited to apply for a summer internship with the Virgin Islands Legislature. The internship program will provide students with an opportunity to learn more about various aspects of politics and public administration. It will run from June 24 through July 26. Included will be enrichment activities pertaining to parliamentary procedure, legislative research and archival processes, post audit analysis, management information systems, public affairs, bill drafting and legal analysis.
To qualify students must have a GPA of 2.8 or higher and be between the ages of 18 to 30. Ten students will be selected to participate. Internships are available on both St. Thomas and St. Croix. Reichhold Center Launches 2013 Youth Moviemaking Workshop on June 24; Applications Due by June 7
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts launches its 2013 Youth Moviemaking Workshop (YMW) on June 24. The seven-week workshop is a hands-on effort designed to motivate, educate and build practical skills in moviemaking for students ages 12 through 16. Applications are due by June 7. The program runs through Aug. 10. It focuses on the language of film, acting and team building skills. During the program, which was created in 2001, students learn to operate cameras, write scripts and perform digital editing using industry standard computer software. Students film and produce their own scripted stories or documentaries which will be featured at a Red Carpet Premiere to be held at the Reichhold Center on Aug. 10.
YWM sessions take place at the Reichhold Center on Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided. CES 4-H 2013 Summer Academies on St. Croix and St. Thomas to Open July 1; Register Now
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will offer its annual summer camp for young people ages five to 14 on St. Croix and St. Thomas beginning in July. Known as the 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program's 4-H Summer Academy, session will run for five weeks, from July 1 to August 1. The 2013 theme is "Celebrating the Past, Creating the Future." The camps will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.
The fee is $200 for the first child in a family, and $150 for each additional child in the same family. Registration will be held beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, at the Cooperative Extension Service located in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix and in the New House Building on the St. Thomas campus. Parents and guardians must bring birth certificates and immunization cards for each child to be registered. Children must be five years of age before July 1. Admission will be on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a special rate for children of UVI employees. UVI Conducting English and Math Placement Tests for 2013 Summer Sessions and Fall Semester
The University of the Virgin Islands is conducting mathematics and English placement testing for the Summer and Fall 2013 semesters. See dates, times and locations below. Both tests are computer-based and are administered simultaneously. There is no set time period for completing the tests, as persons continue until they are finished. However, many individuals are able to finish in approximately one hour. A picture ID is required to take the placement tests. Calculators will not be permitted during the math placement test. USVI/BVI High School Students Invited to Join Free Coral Reef Discovery Week Summer Camp
The UVI Center for Marine and Environmental Studies will conduct Coral Reef Discovery Week 2013, a free camp for USVI and BVI high school students from July 22 to 26, on the St. Thomas campus. Participants will learn about natural marine resources and marine science opportunities of the US Virgin Islands. This camp will be in session daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies. This fun and hands-on experience is supported by UVI faculty, staff and students, and is made possible with sponsorship from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. The camp will focus on increasing the diversity of marine science educational opportunities offered in the territory with the ultimate goal of increasing local participation in marine science. USVI and BVI students aged 15-19 are welcome to apply.

UVI Business Professor and Summer Sessions Coordinator Dr. Tonjia Coverdale encouraged everyone to see what UVI Summer Sessions have to offer. She said courses may be beneficial for people of all ages who want to enhance their education, re-tool their skills for a career change, or start a degree program. "You don't have to be enrolled or matriculated at UVI to take courses," Dr. Coverdale said. Summer Sessions also provide a good opportunity for matriculated students to stay in sequence with courses for their respective degree programs. UVI Students Can Take Selected Summer Courses Through UVI ONLINE
The University of the Virgin Islands now offers its students the ability to take selected summer courses online. While traveling or otherwise away from campus, students can complete course work online this summer through UVI ONLINE.
