UVI Offers Public Look at Early Medical School Selection Program
UVI's College of Science and Mathematics will sponsor a public seminar on the Early Medical School Selection Program it participates in with Boston University's School of Medicine on Thursday, Jan. 24. The program has produced 25 physicians in the more than 20 years it has existed. It is designed to offer an early and decompressed transition from university to medical school curriculum. High school counselors, teachers, parents and students interested in careers as physicians are highly encouraged to attend and learn more about this exciting opportunity.
The presentation is scheduled for 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. It will be videoconferenced to North West Wing Rooms 134-136 on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Reichhold Center Invites UVI Community to the Launch of the Second Half of 2013 Season on Jan. 26
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts invites the UVI community to the launch of the second half of its 2013 season with a concert on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. Enjoy the music of Grammy-winning saxophonist Najee, R&B vocalist Maysa, and piano player Alex Bugnon. UVI faculty, staff and students who present their UVI ID at the box office receive $10 off the first two tickets purchased. Tickets are as low as $35 for this triple header. VIUCEDD to Offer American Sign Language Classes on St. Thomas and St. Croix
Beginner Level I and Level II classes in American Sign Language will be offered in February on St. Thomas and St. Croix by UVI's Virgin Islands Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD). Classes begin on Feb. 4 and 5 and continue through April. The Level I class will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays. Level II classes will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost for classes is $110.
Classes on St. Thomas are offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Teacher Education Room T114 on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, classes are offered from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. at the VIUCEDD Office at #1 Golden Grove (across from Spicy Grill). In addition to recent NPR coverage of the UVI Aquaponics System (see UVI Today... updates), VI Lottery tickets for the Jan. 31, 2013, drawing features photos showing the UVI Aquaponics System. UVI Agricultural Experiment Station Research Specialist Don Bailey said he hopes lottery spotlight will draw local attention to the possibility of developing aquaponics systems in the territory. UVI Community Asked to Remove Golden Jubilee Logos from Respective Areas
The Public Relations Office reminds members of the UVI community to remove physical and electronic Golden Jubilee logos, as UVI's Golden Jubilee 50th Anniversary had ended. The Golden Jubilee logos, which were incorporated into the UVI brand for 2012, were used electronically in e-mail signatures, document files and webpages. They were also used as decals on doors and windows, and in signage. Members of the UVI community should aim to have the logos removed by the end of January. Commissioning Ceremony Set for Senior Cadet Khalid Matthew on Jan. 23 on St. Croix
The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program on the Albert A. Sheen Campus invites members of the UVI community to the commissioning ceremony for Khalid D. Matthew on Wednesday, Jan. 23. The ceremony will take place in the Great Hall at 1 p.m. Cadet Matthew recently completed a BA degree in business administration. UVI President Dr. David Hall will represent the University. Lieutenant Colonel Daniel McCray will preside over the swearing in and serve as the day's guest speaker. McCray is the ROTC Regional Commander, based at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. CSAP January Gathering to Focus on Cultivating Mindfulness; Set Jan. 24
UVI's Center for the Study of Spirituality and Professionalism (CSAP) invites the UVI community to a January Gathering from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, on the patio of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Presenter Anne Nayer, MSW, ACC, will speak on the topic of "Cultivating Mindfulness." She will cover strategies for navigating relationships and an overview of the spiritual roots of mindfulness and its expansion into and beyond psychology, and mental and emotional wellbeing, into the fields of neuroscience, education and business.
Nayer, a licensed psychotherapist and certified life coach, works with Synergy Center for Health and Wellness. She holds a master's degree in clinical social work from Yeshiva University in New York and a Life Coaching certification from the Academy of Coaching Excellence. She combines the traditional approaches of psychotherapy with an eclectic and empowering approach to healing, sustainable well-being and happiness. National Student Exchange Program Applications Now Available; Deadline Jan. 31
Now is the time for UVI students considering participation in the National Student Exchange (NSE) program in academic year 2013-2014 to complete and return NSE application forms. The deadline for applications is Thursday, Jan. 31. Applications are available from the Counseling and Placement Center located in Rouppe House (along with Student Housing) on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 721 on the Albert A. UVI's CETL Offers myCampus Training Sessions in January
UVI's Center for Excellence in Teaching Learning has scheduled training sessions in the use of the University's myCampus portal for Jan. 23, 28 and 30. The portal, among other things, offers a "Messages" function that is now the University's selected method for sending email to internal groups such as students, faculty, staff, etc. MyCampus training takes place from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Library conference rooms on St. Thomas and St. Croix. World-Renowned Neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson to be 'Man-Up' Keynote Speaker
World-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., will be the keynote speaker at the University of the Virgin Islands' third-annual "Man-Up" Male Empowerment Conference. The conference is scheduled for Feb. 4, at UVI's Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas, and Feb. 5, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. This year's theme is: "Man-Up: Discovering Your Gifts and Talent." Also selected to speak at the conference are professor, author and director M.K. Asante, Jr., and Mothers Against Guns (MAG) Executive Director Celia Carroll.

UVI to Offer Summer Course in Global Leadership Development
The University of the Virgin Islands will offer a unique, two-week summer course in Global Leadership Development in 2013. The intensive course is designed for students as well as non-students interested in a wide range of disciplines including: business, education, liberal arts, social science, nursing, science, mathematics, psychology, social sciences, tourism, hospitality, social work, public administration and communication. It is designed to provide training from a multi-discipline perspective for individuals who are passionate about making a difference and who aspire to the top leadership positions in their fields. The course is titled Business 400 Summer Institute Global Leaders for undergraduates and Business 540 Summer Institute Global Leaders for graduates.
Participants in the course may also qualify to attend the Inaugural "International Conference on Leadership, Management and Strategic Development" planned during UVI's Summer Institute course. Deadline for Submissions, Letters for UVI's 50th Anniversary Time Capsules Now Set for Jan. 31, 2013
The Time Capsule Subcommittee of UVI's Golden Jubilee Committee is again asking members of the University community to submit items for inclusion in each time capsule. The committee is also seeking letters from students, staff, faculty and alumni describing what they think UVI will be like in 50 years. Please submit items and/or letters for inclusion in the time capsules by January 31, 2013, to Raquel Silver at rsantia@live.uvi.edu or call (340) 692- 4061.
Since announcing plans to create UVI 50th Anniversary Time Capsules on both campuses, many suggestions and some forwarded items have been received. "The sky is the limit on what can be placed in the time capsule," said Subcommittee Chair Raquel Silver. "Be imaginative." The time capsules will be capped in 2013, not to be opened for 50 years - in 2062.

Dishes Sought for UVI's Afternoon on the Green
The University of the Virgin Islands annual Afternoon on the Green is set for noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, on the St. Thomas campus' Herman E. Moore Golf Course. The entire community is invited to the Afternoon on the Green for a day of food, family and fun.

Volunteers are sought to assist with the 2013 Afternoon on the Green on March 10. Nominations for Afternoon on the Green Student and Non-Student Volunteer Scholarships Sought
UVI's Afternoon on the Green Committee is seeking nominations for two scholarships presented annually at the popular Afternoon on the Green "friendraiser" held each March on the St. Thomas campus. Nominations are sought for the UVI Student Volunteer of the Year Scholarship and for the UVI Volunteer of the Year Scholarship. The scholarships - valued at $3,000 for the student and $1,000 for the non-student - are designed to honor individuals who provide significant contributions of service to either UVI or to the Virgin Islands community.
- UVI Student Volunteer: To be eligible for the Student Volunteer of the Year Scholarship, individuals must be currently enrolled at UVI and expect to matriculate to full-time status during the 2013-14 academic year. There are no residency or grade point requirements. To apply students must: submit an application form - see below for a link; attach a summary showing a minimum of 50 hours of community service at UVI or in the local community over the past 12 months; and submit a letter or letters verifying the community service performed.
- UVI Volunteer: To be eligible for the UVI Volunteer of the Year Scholarship, a person affiliated with the University, who is not a student, must: provide basic personal information; and provide specific, verifiable details on how their substantial contributions (a minimum of 50 hours during the past 12 months) impacted the quality of service to the recipient organization. Persons affiliated with UVI could be alumni, parents of students, faculty, staff or supporters.

SBDC, Rare Earth Studio Offer Skills Discovery Workshops
The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and Rare Earth Studio, Inc. offer a two-hour Skills Discovery Workshops designed for participants to learn about the many facets of the lucrative fine jewelry industry, and other creative expression, on Jan. 26 and Feb. 2. The sessions take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Rare Earth Studio at 32A Dronningens Gada, Suites 2 and 7. The presenters are occupational therapist Tina Blue and Rare Earth Director Ivanne Farr.
