UVI School of Business to Host Open House on Choice Wireless Internship Opportunities on Aug. 29

UVI's School of Business will host a Choice Wireless Internship Open House at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, in the second-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Tony Shepherd, the CEO of Choice Wireless, will speak to students about Internship opportunities available this Fall semester. (Note: This activity was originally scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 23.)

VI Research & Technology Park Directors to Meet on Aug. 24

The Board of Directors of UVI's Research & Technology Park will hold a meeting at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, at the RTPark offices on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Seating is limited. The session will also be available via teleconference. For more information call (340) 692-4200.


UVI Professor, Antilles Graduate Set Dual Piano Recital at Reichhold Center on Aug. 26

A dual piano recital featuring Antilles School graduate Ade Warrington and music professor Dr. Lorna C. Young-Wright is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Admission is free. The program will feature Jazz compositions by Dave Brubeck and Gershwin.

The recital is sponsored in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts.


UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts to Unveil 2012-2013 Season on Aug. 30

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts unveils its 2012-2013 season at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, (Postponed due to weather from the original date of Aug. 23.) with the traditional St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event at the Reichhold Theatre. Reichhold fans in attendance will be the first to find out which exciting artists are on tap for the new season. Business After Hours features complimentary appetizers and the famous "Chamber $2 Bar." It will also offer the opportunity to sign up for seasons subscriptions and qualify for a special eight percent-off the regular price. There will also be a raffle, with prizes such as tickets to Reichhold Shows and $500 shopping sprees at Gottlieb's Quick Way, Cost-U-Less and PriceSmart. Volunteers Needed by UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts is seeking volunteers for the 2012-2013 performance season. Free GYN Clinic Planned for St. Thomas Campus on Sept. 6

The Health Services Office on UVI's St. Thomas campus will conduct a free GYN clinic from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Health Services Center. Pap smears, birth control pills, STD tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea and pregnancy tests will be available. To make an appointment, or for more information, call the office at (340) 693-1124.

SGA-St. Croix to Host Freshman and Special Election on Sept. 12

The Student Government Association's Elections Committee on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will host freshman and special elections from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the 100 level of the Evans Center. The committee seeks students for various leadership roles, including freshman, sophomore and senior senators.

Applications and election petitions are available in the Office of Student Activities. The application deadline is September 5, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. For additional information please contact Kevin Dixon SGA President at sgastx@myuvi.net.

UVI Postpones Final 2012 Phonathon to Sept. 17-20; Volunteers Sought

Volunteers are needed for UVI's final Phonathon of 2012, which is now scheduled from Sept. 17 through 20, on St. Thomas. The postponement is due to impending inclement weather conditions. Volunteers will work from 5:30 to 9 p.m. each evening in the first-floor conference room of UVI's Administration and Conference Center. They will make calls and process on-line pledges from Reichhold Center for the Arts patrons as well as traditional and special alumni. Prizes will be awarded to top performers and dinner will be served. Persons interested in volunteering one or more evenings should call the Office of Institutional Advancement at (340) 693-1047.

Cruzan VIRIL Donates $40,000 for UVI Student Scholarships

Long-time University of the Virgin Islands supporter Cruzan VIRIL Ltd. has contributed an additional $40,000 in support of student scholarships. The donation was made during a formal check presentation on August 1, at the Cruzan Rum distillery on St. Croix.

Cruzan VIRIL Ltd. President and CEO Gary Nelthropp was accompanied at the presentation by a number of UVI alumni who are employed by the company. Cruzan began its tradition of supporting UVI students in 1987. This donation brings the total Cruzan donation to $695,000. UVI President Dr. David Hall and Vice President for Institutional Advancement Dionne V. Jackson were on hand to receive the contribution. Call for Abstracts Issued for Fall 2012 ECS Student Research Symposium

UVI's College of Science and Mathematics and the Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) program invite undergraduate and graduate students to participate in the Annual UVI Fall Student Research Symposium. Students must register and submit their abstract at http://ecs.uvi.edu by, Monday, Sept. 10, in order to participate.

The symposium is part of an overall effort to increase research training and promote excellence among UVI students. It provides an opportunity for students to display the results of their work from their summer research experiences and for the public to interact with them.Student presentations are evaluated by a panel of judges from the community for their scientific content and their clarity of presentation.

The Fall Research Symposium will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23, on the St. Thomas campus in the first-floor conference room of UVI's Administration and Conference Center. Students will set up beginning at 11 a.m. and the symposium will be open to the public from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Airfare may be provided for St. Croix students who have registered and submitted an abstract by Sept. 10. The registration fee is $100. Waivers are available. Each registered participant will receive a name badge, lunch, abstract booklet and presentation feedback. UVI St. Thomas Campus Bookstore to Offer Extended Hours; Refund Policy Posted

The Bookstore on UVI's St. Thomas campus has announced it will be open for extended hours for the beginning of the Fall 2012 semester on the following schedule.

  • Aug. 20 to 24 - 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Aug. 25 - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Aug. 27 to 31 - 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The St. Thomas UVI Bookstore regular hours - Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The Fall semester refunds and exchange period will be Aug. 20 through Aug. 24. The Bookstore adheres to a "no receipt-no refund policy."

UVI Bookstore on St. Croix Schedules Extended Hours for Beginning of Fall Semester

The UVI Bookstore on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix has announced the following schedule of extended hours for the opening weeks of the Fall 2012 semester.

  • Aug. 21-23 - 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Aug. 24 - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Aug. 27-30 - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Aug. 31 - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Regular St. Croix UVI Bookstore hours - Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

VIUCEDD to Offer American Sign Language Classes in September

Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will be offering (ASL) American Sign Language Classes - Level I and Level II - on St. Thomas and St. Croix beginning September 10. Training Set for UVI Website Content Contributors on Sept. 7; RSVP Required

Training sessions for UVI website content contributors are conducted at the beginning and end of each semester. Individuals interested in managing their department's section of the UVI website must RSVP at least one week before the training. Training is available for UVI faculty and staff only.

The next training is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 7, 2012. All sessions will be held in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning on the St. Thomas campus.

Time - Topics

  • 9 to 10 a.m. - Level 1: Posting Basic Content
  • 10 to 11 a.m. - Level 2: Uploading Forms, Brochures & Other Documents
  • 11 a.m. to noon -Level 2.5: Resizing & Uploading Images - New
  • 1 to 4:30 p.m. - Working Lab with the Webmaster

During first-level training, participants will learn to log-in to SharePoint, utilize the page edit menu, navigate the tool bar menus to edit a page, layout a page, make a table, preview a webpage and publish a webpage. Tips to ease webpage maintenance will be shared throughout the training. Second-level training participants will learn to upload graphics, forms and brochures into their respective websites. If time permits, the trainer will show participants how to use Microsoft Picture Manager to edit and resize images. Participants should bring a jump drive with text, graphics and other files for posting online.

Employee Performance Evaluation Survey Results Available

This information is presented on the behalf of the St. Thomas Presidential Advisory Council (TPAC).

The results from the Employee Performance Evaluation Survey are in and we (members of the TPAC committee) want to thank you for participating in the process.

When UVI employees were asked if they thought that the current evaluation process does a good job at evaluating their performance, more than half of the respondents either Disagreed or Strongly Disagreed. Additionally, UVI employees spoke out and shared what they felt was the most important thing that could be done to improve the evaluation process. The results were presented to the President and are scheduled to be presented to Cabinet in August.

St. Thomas Campus SGA Sets Election for Sept. 12; Candidate Applications Due Aug. 31

UVI's St. Thomas Campus Student Government Association Elections Committee has approved a new schedule for the Fall elections. The deadline to submit applications is Aug. 31. Elections will be held on Sept. 12.

Applications are available from the Student Affairs Office. All candidates who are considering running for office must submit a certification letter from the Registrar's office to verify eligibility, along with their application and petition. Candidates who previously applied to run for office may submit a new application or just submit the certification letter. Student Competition Promotes Role Swap with UVI President

Ever wondered what it would be like to be President of the University of the Virgin Islands? If you had a chance, what would you say or do to make a difference in the lives of UVI students, faculty and staff? UVI's President for a Day Competition will give two UVI students, (one on St. Thomas and one on St. Croix), an opportunity to trade places with UVI President Dr. David Hall. It's the first time that the President For a Day Competition will take place at UVI.

During the Fall 2012 semester, President Hall will swap roles with one UVI undergraduate student on St. Thomas. He'll swap roles with one undergraduate student on the Albert A. VI-EPSCoR Seeks UVI Community Input in Preparing New Funding Proposal

The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) is in the process of preparing its proposal to the National Science Foundation for a new funding cycle. The entire UVI community is invited to become involved in this effort and in the program that will result from a favorable review by the NSF. PRAXIS Prep Course to be Offered at UVICELL on St. Thomas in September

Registration is now open for the PRAXIS preparation course offered by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education.

The six-week course will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays beginning Sept. 22. Classes will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus.

The course is designed for secondary school teachers or elementary content area teachers (art, music, physical education, etc.) hired after the 1995-1996 school year who are required to take the PRAXIS exam. The prep course prepares teachers for the exam so that they can be designated as highly qualified in order to meet the mandates of the Federal No Child Left Behind Act. UVICELL Course Designed to Help Human Resources Professionals Achieve National Certification

Human Resource professionals who wish to obtain nationally recognized certification can now take advantage of a preparatory course being held by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. The Human Resource Certification program will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Sept. 10. Classes will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus.

The course provides a solid foundation for meeting human resource challenges found in today's demanding work environment and prepares professionals to achieve Professional in Human Resources (PHR®) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®) designation. The certification is awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute and signifies that human resource professionals have achieved the industry certification that sets them apart as true professionals in their field. UVICELL Offers Course in Basics of Real Estate Industry

Individuals interested in learning more about the real estate industry are being urged to register for the real estate course offered by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center.

The course - Real Estate Principles and Practices - will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 11, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. It is designed to expose individuals to the real estate industry and specifically prepares them for the real estate salesperson licensing examination. A variety of topics will be covered including real estate theory, mathematics, and USVI rules and regulations, including applicable sections of the VI Code. UVI-CELL to Offer Six-week Praxis II Preparation Course on St. Thomas

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a six-week, classroom course designed to prepare teachers to take and pass the Praxis II exam. The course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on six Saturdays - Sept. 22 and 29, and Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27. The course will use clear explanations, numerous examples, and graphics and animation, to prepare teachers to take the Praxis II test. Course to Focus on Getting the Most of Your Smart Phone or Tablet

Smart phones and tablets - the latest technological advances - are designed to make lives easier, but the novice user can be overwhelmed. To unravel the mystery of these devices, the UVI Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will conduct a course to help novice users understand their devices and use their capabilities to the fullest.

Although titled Mastering Your iPhone/iPad, the course is open to individuals with any smart phone or tablet device. The three-week course will be held 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays with the start date to be determined. The cost is $150 for 15 hours of instruction. Students will learn to master basic features and functions, efficiently operate their devices, integrate apps into their daily lives, sync with other devices and other applications, and personalize their devices.
