Celebrating 50 Years of Nursing Education
University of the Virgin Islands nursing alumni, faculty and friends are invited to celebrate 50 years of nursing education at CVI/UVI. The College of the Virgin Islands (CVI) program started with 25 students in 1965 and since then, has produced over 700 nursing graduates in the past 50 years. As part of the anniversary celebration, events are scheduled for May 15 – 16 on St. Thomas and May 17 – 18 on St. Croix. The theme is “Caring and Making a difference.”

- On-site late registration begins 9 am on May 15 in Nursing Building on the St. Thomas Campus.
- On-site late registration begins 10 am on May 17 in the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus, St. Croix.

- Commencement
- Nursing alumni who donated $50 or more to the UVI Alumni School of Nursing Fund, who pledged $50 or more to the fund, or who purchased a reunion program ad of $50 or more will receive a philanthropy honor cord commemorating his/her contribution to 50 Years of Nursing Education at CVI/UVI.
- Forty honor cords are available per campus. The cords may be collected at the Office of Institutional Advancement (STT: 693-1040 STT and STX: 692-4231) from Monday through Thursday between 1 pm and 4 pm.
- There will be receptions before and after commencement.

Pinning Ceremony on May 12- Since the mid 70’s, the School of Nursing has been pinning nursing students and creating beautiful, meaningful moments to remember for a lifetime. Join fellow nursing alumni, faculty, and staff to reminisce on times past and create new memoirs at the nursing student Pinning Ceremony. Come support the nursing students as they take the sacred oath of commitment, the Florence Nightingale Pledge, at the St. Thomas Reformed Church on Tuesday, May 12 at 6 pm. There is no cost for this event.
- Commencement on May 14 - Join fellow nursing alumni, faculty, and staff for a commencement ceremony to recognize the next generation of nurses. Be there to support and cheer on our future nurses as they prepare to embark on the newest chapter of their lives. The ceremony will take place at the university’s Sports and Fitness Center on Thursday, May 14 at 1:30 pm. We ask that all nurses wear white at the ceremony. There is no cost for this event.
- Registration - Registration begins at 9:00 am on Friday, May 15 in the Nursing Building located on the university’s Upper Campus. Participants will receive name tags, tickets, and other pertinent items and information. Participants can also register for events at this time, but will be charged with a late fee.
- Continuing Education - Come lend your ear to listen to Dr. Saifya George Dalmida as she discusses the “Use of Evidenced-Based Research in Nursing Practice” at 10 am in UVI’s Chase Auditorium. Room 110 is the place to be and it is located in the Business Building located on Upper Campus. Please register for this event online. The cost for this event is $35; for those wishing to attend the seminar without receiving the CEU Certificate, the fee is $20. [Note: Time Change]
- Luncheon on May 15 - Join fellow nursing alumni, faculty, and staff for a luncheon hosted in the UVI School of Business building. Looking forward to seeing you there at 12:30 pm sharp on the Upper Campus (B101, B102 & B103). The cost for this event is $35. [Note: Venue Change]
- Bennie and Martha Benjamin Reception on May 15 - Join fellow interns at the Grand Hotel to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Student Nurse Internship Program and major support of the Bennie and Martha Benjamin Foundation. The festivities begin at 6:30 pm and take place on the Lower Level and Courtyard of the Grand Hotel, located in downtown Charlotte Amalie. This event is by invitation only.
- Dinner and Dancing on May 15 - Join fellow nursing alumni, faculty, and staff for a night of good food and traditional music on the Upper Level of the Grand Hotel. Don’t forget your dancing shoes; be ready at 8 pm to dance the night away to traditional music, including Road Marches for the past ten years. The cost for this event is $50.
- Prayer Service on Magens Bay on May 16 - Join fellow nursing alumni, faculty, and staff at 10:00 am on Magens Bay Beach to give thanks and praise for celebrating 50 years of Nursing Education at CVI/UVI. Dress code for this event is casual with beachwear, as there will be beach party that follows. There is no cost for this event.
- Magens Bay Beach Party on May 16 - Following the Prayer Service, join fellow nursing alumni, faculty, and staff at shed #4 for another day of fun in the sun on the beach, this time with a steel pan beach tramp. Remember to walk to with sunscreen and insect repellent to keep the good times rolling. The food, music, and dancing begins at 11 am. Dress casually with beachwear. Looking forward to seeing you there. The cost for this event is $35.
- Formal Reception with Governor Mapp on May 16 - Join Governor Kenneth Mapp at Government House for dinner and dancing under the stars. The dress code for this event is island elegant, so no tuxedos or evening gowns required. Come and enjoy the jazz stylings of UVI’s own jazz band, led by Professor Joseph Francis, Jr. The festivities begin at 7 pm; and you are requested to meet the shuttle at the east end of the Fort Christian parking lot. - Prayer Service at the Great Hall on May 17 - Following registration, join fellow nursing alumni, faculty and staff for prayer service at 11:00 am in the UVI Great Hall on the Albert Sheen Campus, thanking God for 50 years of nursing education. The prayer service will be followed by a meet and greet with a continental breakfast. The cost for the Meet and Greet with continental breakfast is $30 and will take place in the UVI Cafetorium. The Planning Committee for the Celebration of 50 Years of Nursing Education at CVI and UVI is offering you an opportunity to participate in the Celebration. You have an opportunity to contribute to our booklet which will be distributed to all participants in the Celebration. All funds will be deposited in a special account for the Nursing Education Programs.
