Program Description

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Summer Bridge Program focuses on student transition from high school to college during a five-week, academic program.

Bridge students will jump-start their college careers at UVI by gaining an advantage over the typical freshman. How? Because this summer bridge program is specifically designed to assist students in the areas of mathematics, reading, writing, and college success (including but not limited to: testing skills, studying habits, time management, and learning to become interdependent learners). An added perk of the summer program is students having the opportunity to take university placement tests. As a result, Summer Bridge students will be better qualified and ready for college-level course work during their first year, and will more likely forgo taking remedial, non-credit courses.

Currently, many entering UVI freshmen end up taking a minimum of one non-credit developmental or remedial course in mathematics or language arts during the beginning of their college journeys. These freshmen find themselves paying more financially and spending additional time on their education and are less likely to actually complete their degree requirements.

This is why Summer Bridge is a recommended choice and go to option for many entering fall semester freshmen. For the duration of the bridge program Summer Bridge students will benefit not only from academic rigor, but also professional development and success workshops.

Please note Summer Bridge 2022 is a campus residential program hosted on the Albert A. Sheen Campus, St. Croix.

In addition, participants will:

  • learn how to utilize UVI's campus resources to include research and how to navigate library resources
  • be advised about their individual degree programs
  • attend workshops on college life and faculty expectations
  • attend workshops on critical thinking and note taking

By the end of the program and through out their college careers, Summer Bridge students will recognize how UVI's Summer Bridge Program has been essential to their successful transition from high school to college life, and how it has set a foundation for their college journey and successes.
