VI-EPSCoR - Graduate Education
VI-EPSCoR is proud to support two graduate programs in UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics. The first is a Masters program in Mathematics for Secondary Educators (MMAT), which strengthens the teaching qualifications of secondary math teachers and helps the public school system meet federal and territorial requirements. The second is a Masters program in Marine and Environmental Science (MMES). The MMES program is designed to prepare professionals for careers in marine and environmental science and in natural resource management.
Master of Marine and Environmental Science
VI-EPSCoR education investments are strengthening STEM education in the territory and creating a pipeline of young Virgin Islanders entering the fields of marine and environmental science. In the first grant, one of our three major achievements was the creation of a master’s degree at UVI in marine and environmental science (MMES), as the cornerstone for training Virgin Islanders in marine and environmental science and natural resource management. The first cohort in the new Master of Marine and Environmental Science (MMES) program began in August 2007 and the program had its first graduate in May 2009 with two more scheduled to defend their theses by the end of summer 2009. MMES has partnered with graduate programs at other universities to broaden its educational offerings, particularly in natural resource management, and to create linkages for advanced graduate work.

Master of Mathematics for Secondary Educators
VI-EPSCoR education investments are strengthening STEM education in the territory and creating a pipeline of young Virgin Islanders entering the fields of marine and environmental science. In the first grant, VI-EPSCoR had three major achievements of which one was:
- Partnering with the University and the Department of Education to strengthen K-12 STEM education, through development of an Education Advisory Board for K-12 STEM education, and creation of a master’s degree program in Mathematics for Secondary Math Teachers (MMAT).
The program produces students who will eventually positively impact the Mathematics curriculum, teaching approaches and performance levels of students in the Territory. The program is well designed to meet the needs of practicing teachers, allowing them to continue to work while earning their Masters degree on island. Scholarships provided by the Department of Education support the participation of public school teachers in the degree program, which is designed to accommodate students in cohorts. Due to the program design, cohorts graduate every two years.
